‘Multimodal mapping’ refers to the transferring data between different performative disciplines, where something such as the movement of a dancer, a heartbeat, or the sound from a violin can be measured and translated into another gesture, such as a projected animation, lights on a costume or synthesised sounds. This approach seeks to build live and lightweight bridges between disciplines that can allow artists to collaborate in flexible and unexpected ways.
The MetaMaps program will start by employing a local team of Hong Kong artists, and over a series of workshops we will invite international artists to join virtually, to give talks, share knowledge, and build artistic and narrative collaborative connections between their work. Over two years, this workshop program will produce a series of performances based on these collaborations, first in Hong Kong, then in Australia and Spain, and finally we will return to Hong Kong for a final large-scale public presentation. Thematically, these performances will be linked by the choice of artists for the workshops, technological narrative components such as symbiosis, simulation, and prosthesis, and emergent connections built over each workshop session.

The MetaMaps Workshops will be a series of workshops for Hong Kong and international artists that build new collaborative relationships based on the technological concept of multimodal mapping.
